Jiangsu University gained the approval for master degree authorization on Environmental Engineering in 1997, with sequentially approval for doctorate degree authorization on Environmental Engineering as second-level discipline in 2003, master degree authorization on Environmental Science and Engineering as first-level discipline in 2005, doctorate degree authorization on Environmental Science and Engineering as first-level discipline in 2011 and post-doctorate center as first-level discipline in 2012. The Environmental Engineering undergraduate major is the distinguished major of Jiangsu Province, Environmental Engineering and Environmental Protection Equipment Engineering are two key majors of Jiangsu Province, with Jiangsu Province Center for Environmental Science and Engineering Practice and Education.
In order to develop high-level, distinguished and internationalization discipline, The School of Environment and Safety Engineering (SESE) emphasized on freeing mind, centralization on the key target and discipline to carry out essential and characteristic developing strategies, with extra attempts on research team and instrument platform development. With the increased academic quality and influence, the school successfully trained a group of high-competent talents for domestic and international environmental industrial and simultaneously achieved fast and impressive discipline development.
By successfully taking the advantage of complete disciplines of comprehensive Jiangsu University and to fully uncover interdisciplinary superiority, SESE developed interdisciplines covered from environmental science, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, biological science, ecology, medical science, biotechnology, mechanical engineering and fluidic machinery. Four major subdisciplines including Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology, Pollutant Control Engineering and Equipment, Environmental Ecology and Remediation, together with Biomass Energy and Bioresource Application, are developed. Rapid development in research team development and research progress of all the four subdisciplines were achieved in the past year, with major research focus and achievement on environmental analytical chemistry, environmental toxicology and health risk, environmental ecology mechanism, eco-toxicology and eco-remediation, water pollutant control and equipment, aqueous eco-remediation engineering, atmosphere pollutant control and equipment, biomass resource and lignocellulose biodegradation. The representative research achievements include fulfilling the Special National Project on Water “Key technology research and demonstration project for combined sewage and rain water high-efficiency retention system by city sewage pipe network construction, renovation and operation control” (Fulfilled in 2012). The research achievement has been successfully applied in domestic water pollutant control of Zhenjiang and general renovation project for Zhenjiang water environmental and middle part of ancient canal. By collaborating with universities and enterprises like Hainan Normal University and Sujing Novel Environmental Material Co., versatile novel materials and equipment for nitrogen and phosphorus remove in eutrophication water were developed for the water remediation applications in Hongcheng Lake (Hainan), East Lake, Meishe River, Tai Lake (Jiangsu), Gaoyou Lake, Ancient canal (Zhenjiang). In recent 4 years, SESE was granted 36 national projects including National Science and Technology Major Project, National Key Technology R&D Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. We were also earned over 70 projects from the ministerial or provincial government. We were awarded over 80 patents. Besides, our faculties have accomplished a series of scientific research advancements that attracted worldwide attentions and published 8 academic monographs, 17 textbooks, over 400 SCI or EI cited research papers (including 10 ESI highly cited papers, over 20 papers published in tier-1 journals).
This desciplicine has 4 research groups focused on the 4 key research topics aforementioned above. With the leading of these research groups, this desciplicine relied on their own advantages to vigorously recruited talent from all over the world and developed a proficient and competent research and teaching team. At present, this descipline employed 17 professors and 23 associated professor, including 15Ph.D. supervisors, 47 master’s supervisors, 3 distinguish professor of Jiangsu University, and 1 innovative base for overseas Chinese entrepreneurship of Jiangsu Province. Besides, we employed 2 adjunct Ph.D. supervisors, 12 foreign adjunct professors, and 1 industrial professor of Jiangsu Province.
This discipline also provided high quality social services relied on the advantages of its high-level professionals, research achievement and research facilities. For example, we offered series of training courses of environmental protection for local governmental officers or jointly appointed professors from our discipline to the related government departments or companies, which greatly met the requirement from the local government or companies. We also served as the think-tank of Zhengjiang in Environmental protection and actively involved in the environmental protection and ecological civilization development, e.g., we edited the “the 13th five-year plan for environment protection of Zhenjiang” and established the“work plan for water pollution prevention and control”. Moreover, our professor also organized the 395th national xiangshan science conference, which is the first national science conference focused on biomass and biofuels.
We have established various international collaboration with the colleagues from all over the world, which including Michigan State University (USA), University of Rochester (USA), University of Leeds (UK), Mie University (Japan), Nagoya Sangyo University (Japan), Tohoku University (Japan), University of Tsukuba (Japan), Changwon National University (South Korea), University of Guplph (Canada), University of Saskatchwan (Canada). Besides, we established scientific research cooperation with Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (CAS, China), Nanjing Institute of Geography & Limnology (CAS, China), South China Institute of Environmental Sciences (MEP, China), Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences (MEP, China), Harbin Institute of Technology (China) and Nankai University (China).In collaboration with Jiangsu Sujing Group Co.,Jiangsu ATK Group, Jiangsu Tianyu Environmental Protection Co., several prestigious companies, we also established a series of adjunct R&D research centers, including Synergic Innovation Center for Water Treatment Materials and Technologies, Engineering Research Center for Poultry Pollution Control etc.
Education is one of the most important focuses of this discipline. To date, there are 50 students were awarded as Ph.D. degree by this discipline, including 3 foreign Ph.D. students (2 was recognized as excellent doctoral thesis in Jiangsu University), 3 students was awarded as excellent doctoral thesis in Jiangsu Province, 24 students gained the financial support from innovative program for graduate students of Jiangsu Province. This discipline also granted master degrees to more than 290 master students, including 3 students was awarded as excellent master thesis in Jiangsu Province,1 student was awarded as first prize of National College Students’Social Practice and Science and Technology Competition (NCSSPSTC), 1 student was awarded as third prize of the NCSSPSTC. In addition, there are more than 30 postdoctoral researchers in the center for post-doctoral studies of this discipline. This center was granted more than 20 projects from national post-doctoral research fund, over 20 projects from Jiangsu provincial post-doctoral research fund.
